Dermal Filler Treatments
Dermal fillers are a gel-like substance which can be injected into the skin. They help to restore volume, hydrate the skin, smooth wrinkles and enhance facial contours. Dermal fillers are a common cosmetic procedure that can produce results right away and can last for months or years.

Dermal fillers are made from a variety of substances and most commonly, Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers. HA cross-linked dermal fillers are my choice of filler as an aesthetic practitioner, as HA is a naturally occurring substance in the human body which helps keep skin hydrated and plump.

As we age, the factors that affect the facial skin include; sun exposure, genetics and lifestyle. As we get older our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat and the facial muscles work closer to the skin surface, so smile lines, folds and creases become more apparent.

Marionette lines, also called melomental folds are creases which extend from the mouth corners down to the chin. This can worsen as we age and can progress to jowls later on.​ These lines can be mild, moderate or severe which can make the lower face look heavier and a downturned appearance.

After applying a numbing cream, cross-linked HA filler is injected directly into these lines between the mouth and chin to restore lost volume, hydrate and soften wrinkles.​
Results can be seen immediately and can last 8-12 months.
Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial folds are the deep creases from the nose down to the mouth corners, also known as smile Lines, or laugh lines. The folds become more prominent as we age due to volume loss in the upper face, then gravity causes these folds to form.

A cross-linked HA filler is injected directly into the surrounding area to help to restore lost volume and soften the appearance of these folds. The goal of nasolabial injections is to even out the skin, but add volume and hydration to leave a smoother, refreshed-looking appearance.
Results can be seen immediately and can last between 12-18 months.

The Malar fat pad is the focus of the central third of the upper face. This is a dense fibro-fatty pad within the subcutaneous layer, whose borders include the nasolabial fold, the infraorbital rim and the zygomatic prominence.
As we age or lose a lot of weight, our natural fatty pad in the cheeks diminishes and gravity pulls everything downwards. This can cause a sagging of the skin, more prominent and deeper nasolabial folds and a sunken appearance.

By injecting a good quality cross-linked Hyaluronic filler directly above the cheek bones and molding it into place will help to lift the cheek, restoring volume and plumpness back to the fat pad. By doing this, it can also help lift areas lower down on the face such as, the nasolabial folds.

This procedure seems to be very popular and can achieve great results lasting up to 18 months. Generally, to achieve the best result, 1 ml would be injected on both sides, but this can be discussed on consultation on an individual basis.

Chin augmentation has become an increasingly popular treatment as it helps to restore volume and structure that diminishes as we age, causing the chin to become flatter, wider and more masculine looking.

When looking at the chin projection, we look at the Ricketts line and the proportion of projection between the nose, lips and chin.
​
By placing a good quality Sub Q filler into the chin will help address any irregularities. The thicker consistency also aids structural support; shaping the chin and replacing lost volume.

Due to the density of Sub Q fillers, they tend to last longer than other options, usually lasting between 12-18 months.
Jawline

Signs of aging can be more pronounced in the lower face, not least the jawline. The lower face structure changes as we age; our bones shrink, and the lower face can appear saggy, causing the jowls to look more noticeable.

Dermal fillers can be placed strategically along the jawline to help smooth and plump the skin by stimulating collagen production and HA. This gives a more defined and symmetrical jawline by reducing the heaviness, providing strength and volume to areas where definition appears to be lacking.

Although a sharp jawline is considered attractive in both male and females; men generally have faces with more angles, whereas women have softer facial features.

Men also have broader jaws, whereby females typically have a more heart-shaped face.
