Platelet-Rich Plasma

(PRP) Hair Treatment

What is Hair PRP?

Hair PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy is a non-surgical, medical treatment designed to stimulate natural hair growth and improve hair thickness using the PRP from your own blood. These platelets contain powerful growth factors that support tissue repair and regeneration. When injected into the scalp, the PRP helps to revitalise weakened hair follicles and improve scalp health.

  • Initial Consultation: your nurse will assess the patient’s hair loss type, severity, and overall health to confirm if they are a suitable candidate. They discuss expectations, potential risks, and treatment plan details.

  • Blood Collection: A small sample of the patient's blood (usually 10-20ml) is drawn from the arm, similar to a routine blood test.

  • Centrifugation: The blood sample is placed in a centrifuge machine, which spins at high speed to separate its components. This process concentrates the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) — the part of blood containing growth factors that stimulate hair follicle activity and growth.

  • Preparation for Injection: The concentrated PRP is extracted and may be mixed with other solutions as directed by your nurse.

  • Injection: The scalp will be numbed with a topical anaesthetic to minimize discomfort, then small amounts of PRP will be injected directly into the areas experiencing hair loss, targeting the hair follicles beneath the skin.

For best results – PRP hair therapy requires a course of 3–4 treatments, spaced 4–6 weeks apart for most clients, though a personalised treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.

A maintenance treatment is often recommended every 6–12 months to maintain results.

Hair PRP can be effective for:

  • Male and female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)

  • Diffuse hair thinning

  • Stimulate dormant hair follicles and increase blood supply to the scalp

  • Helps to slow hair loss and promote thicker, healthier-looking hair

  • Early-stage hair loss

  • Strengthen existing hair to improve hair density and quality

  • Excessive hair shedding

  • Supporting and maintaining hair transplant results

Results and Expectations

Hair PRP is a gradual process. Some clients notice reduced hair shedding within the first few months, with visible improvements in hair thickness and quality developing between 3–6 months. Best results are usually seen after completing the full treatment course.

Results vary depending on age, genetics, extent of hair loss, and overall health.

Is Hair PRP Safe?

Yes. Hair PRP is considered very safe as it uses your own blood, significantly reducing the risk of allergic reactions. When performed by a qualified medical professional, complications are rare.

Contraindications

Hair PRP may not be suitable if you:

  • Have a bleeding or platelet disorder

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Have an active scalp infection or inflammatory skin condition

  • Have certain autoimmune or blood disorders

  • Have active cancer or are undergoing chemotherapy

Minor side effects like redness, swelling, bruising, or slight tenderness at the injection sites are normal and should resolve within 3-5 days. You can apply a cool compress to reduce swelling if needed.

We will discuss all after care advice and give you a printed copy to take with you.

If you experience excessive pain, swelling, pus, or signs of infection, contact your treating clinic immediately.
